Hurricane Season Checklist

Preparation for Hurricane Season

As you probably know we are currently in the hurricane season. On the east coast, it extends from June 1 to November 30th. And on the west coast, the season started earlier - May 15th.
The National Weather Service defines hurricanes as violent windstorms with speeds of 74 miles or more per hour. Not only are there high winds; there are also torrential rains that can produce destructive tornadoes that can cause loss of life and property damage. The best natural protection against these dangers is preparation.
One key element in this preparation is an emergency kit. According to FEMA.gov, the disaster emergency kit should contain:
Water (one gallon per person per day for a minimum of 3 days, for drinking and sanitation)
Food (at least a 3-day supply of non-perishable foods)
Small, waterproof flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries
Waterproof matches
Manual can opener for food
Battery-powered radio
First aid kit
Whistle (to signal for help)
Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place)
Garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
Cloth towels, hand sanitizer, & disinfecting wipes to disinfect surface areas
Prescription & non-prescription medications
Prescription eyeglasses and contact lens solution
Infant formula, bottles, diapers, wipes and diaper rash cream
Pet food and extra water for each pet
Cash and/or traveler's checks
Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records saved electronically or in a waterproof, portable container
Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
Complete change of clothing appropriate for the climate and sturdy shoes
Fire extinguisher
Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
Cooking & eating utensils as used by scouts, soldiers or campers, paper cups, plates, paper towels
Writing paper, pen and/or pencil
Books, games, puzzles or other activities for entertainment
Items should be stored in airtight plastic bags and placed in easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or duffel bags in the event of displacement.
Reviewing an emergency communication plan with our families far in advance helps to reassure that everyone knows what to expect, making the troubling time more bearable.
And always remember the importance of counting our Blessings! There are so many good things in life. Just to be in the land of the living with a portion of our health and strength is enough to give thanks. Should we encounter a disaster, there’s no need for us to become despondent because as we were reminded in this week’s Bible Study, God’s Grace is sufficient, and He will see us through whatever circumstances we may face. Yes, we need to prepare both naturally and Spiritually on this journey looking to the hills from whence cometh our Help. Our Help comes from the Lord who made both Heaven and earth. And Jesus said that His Strength is made Perfect in weakness. So, we have nothing to worry about. We can put it ALL in His hands!
